SAP collaborates with South African partners to promote positive masculinities that denounce violence against women and girls.

Mr Mthetho Tshemese a South African, a clinical psychologist from iNDLOBONGELA and artist visited
SAP between November and December 2020 to support male masculinity innovations project. SAP
adopted an approach to work with Mthetho to build a caliber of male champions to promote positive
masculinities that prevent violence against women and children. Through Mthetho’s work, a song, “Wise
Up”, was recorded with Ugandan artists that is being used as a social mobilization too to build
community movements that promote positive masculinities to address violence against women and
children. Mthetho mentored Ugandan artists to champion’s positive masculinities. Through the project,
the song will be aired using online platforms such as WhatsApp. SAP engaged with local artist as
partners and compose music and organize online music festivals.
In addition, SAP collaborates with the Sonke Gender Justice, an internationally renowned organization
based in South Africa that works with men to denounce gender-based violence (GBV). Sonke Gender
Justice will promote the training of male champions in the slums of Katwe and Nakulabye to build
community movements that promote positive masculinities that prevent violence against women and
children.

The project is being supported by UN Women under the European Union (EU)-Spotlight Initiative on
violence against women and girls. In December, SAP together with Mthetho and selected Ugandan
artists made a courtesy call to UN Women where they met with the Country Representative, Dr Maxime
Houinato and his team. Dr Houinato congratulated SAP for its innovative project that brings together
local and international partners to address violence against women and girls. He noted that such an
initiative promotes South-South cooperation and challenged SAP to ensure that through UN Women
funding, it is able to demonstrate results
