200 Girls and Teenage Mothers Skilled to Prevent Unintended Pregnancies and STIs

The adolescent girls and teenage mothers residing in Kampala’s Katwe in Makindye and Nakulabye in
Rubaga divisions have been empowered with knowledge on sexual reproductive health and rights and
how to protect themselves from getting unintended pregnancies and contracting sexually transmitted
infections.

The project which had targeted 240 girls in total as already trained 200 girls.  

The GAIA Contraceptive project specifically targets vulnerable adolescent girls with specific emphasis on
out of the school teenage mothers. The project directly targets 240 girls from the two parishes of
Nakulabye and Katwe.  
SAP is implementing this project in collaboration with stakeholders including: the community leaders,
families, health centres, and local government leaders. The project aims to increase contraceptive use
among adolescents (ages 14 to 18) by increasing their knowledge, attitude and perception about
modern birth control methods and also improving access to contraceptive services at health facilities
while engaging the families and men as power holders in the communities.
The project will also ensure a supportive environment for providing high quality, youth –friendly family
planning services by bringing a range of stakeholders together to discuss barriers and solutions related
to adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) practices during the training sessions.
Slum aid project (SAP) held eight trainings for the out of school adolescent and teenage mothers at the
different zones within Katwe and Nakulabye Parishes. The training aimed to increase contraceptive use
among adolescents (ages 14 to 18) by increasing their knowledge, attitude and perception about
modern birth control methods and also improving access to contraceptive services at health facilities.
The girls were taken through two sessions family planning methods, benefits and the second session
was on behavioural change and life skills.
Objective
To change community individual/group social attitudes that limits and is against adolescent use of
modern contraceptive methods.
Objectives of the training
a. To enhance behavioural change and Life skills amongst the Young girls,
b. To enhance the capabilities of the young girls on the use of modern contraceptives methods.

c. To provide girls with information on the access and availability of Sexual Reproductive Health services
in the community
d. To develop an action plan

The goal of the project is to skill 240 girls.
