Since men are one of the perpetrators of violence against women and girls in communities, Men Engage
Uganda decided to skill partners (SAP and CJSI) on how to work with men as agents of change.
“Men use violence as a strategy of conduct and use strategy as a tool of control. At the end of the day,
we have to support men to manage anger and become problem solvers and agents of ending violence,”
Says Hassan Sekajoolo, the Country Coordinator of Men Engage Uganda.
According to Sekajoolo, the training was paramount because the partners need to be knowledgeable on
how to engage the men as agents of change against GBV. Men Engage Uganda is a network of civil
society organizations that have a role men and boys play for gender equality.
The training attended by staff of CJSI and SAP took place at Slum Aid Project on 20th January 2021.
Mr. Sekajoolo says they look at young boys because they are easy to convince and talk to and
understand the dynamics of social change, unlike men. “It’s a lot easier to instill values and beliefs in boys
when they are young because then they will be in a position to embrace them in adulthood. Men Engage
targets boys between the age of (18-35) and other older men (36-55) and other older men who are
stuck to some social norms and beliefs.
